𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬: In a historic milestone, Zimbabwean social worker Priscilla Kurewa has been elected as the new Chair of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), becoming the second black woman after Shantel Thomas to hold the powerful chair position in the organization's history. Kurewa is a former University of Zimbabwe Social Work lecturer and senior management executive in many Children’s Services Authorities across the UK.

Priscilla is currently the Chair of the Social Workers' Benevolent Trust (SWBT), a UK charity providing financial relief to social workers experiencing severe personal hardship.Priscilla’s groundbreaking victory follows a highly competitive and hard-fought internal campaign. Voting officially closed at noon on Monday, 17 August 2026, with Kurewa emerging victorious. The announcement has triggered widespread celebration across the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, the wider African continent, and the global Black community. Kurewa takes leadership at a critical time for the profession. She will be tasked with guiding BASW through ongoing sector challenges, including fierce campaigns for improved frontline working conditions, public sector resources, and structural reforms to protect practitioners. Under her leadership, the organization is expected to heavily reinforce its foundational mandate as a fearless voice for marginalized and vulnerable communities globally
